WE NEED TO START by accepting one hard truth

NO MONEY INVOLVED THERE IS NO BUSINESS

A lot of you guys must – take the time to accept that – and remember, it is OKAY to pay for other people to contribute to what you are BUILDING. *I will do articles about this – in the future – because this – is something a lot of us have a problem understanding.

IT is also OKAY – to get paid <~ to help other people BUILD what they are BUILDING.

NO ONE – is OBLIGATED to WORK FOR FREE <~ if they do not want to – the desire to make money <~ for spending their time – contributing to something – is NOT a bad thing or SOMETHING that should be used to attack – those PEOPLE.

THE DESIRE TO MAKE MONEY IS NOT A BAD THING

IF – we are going to be honest – think – about what I’m saying. A person tells you they don’t do promo for free and they give you a price. There following and engagement rate has NOTHING to do with the reality of WHY it is reasonable for them to ask to be paid – for the time they spend – contributing to your promotion.

THAT IS WHY THERE ARE MINIMUM WAGE LAWS

READ THAT AGAIN – because that is 99.9% the reason I do not conduct actual BUSINESS with a lot of local rappers – they try to FORCE the narrative that everyone should pay them – and they do not have to pay anyone for the time they spend working with them – to EDUCATE them about BUSINESS. That is why – this piece is so critical.

One more thing – because I need my people to understand this – if I PAY YOU for your participation – I am going to make MONEY from the stuff we do – that is why – paying LOCAL RAPPERS is a INVESTEMENT in myself and HELPFUL to them so they can use the money I give them to do what they please in a comfortable fashion.

EVERYONE HAS A RIGHT TO EARN MONEY

Think about it – the people YOU think are so critical to your MUSIC BUSINESS are NOT going to do anything to contribute to WHAT YOU ARE DOING <~ unless – you understand HOW TO WORK WITH PEOPLE WHEN THERE IS NO MONEY INVOLVED.

Simply PUT – if you are not WORKING TOGETHER – you are NOT NETWORKING – you are NOT WORKING and YOU ARE NOT HELPING YOURSELF OR THEM. In a REAL NETWORKING SITAUTION – PROMOTION IS KEY <~

IT PUSHES THE PEOPLE AWAY WHO WILL WASTE MY TIME AND CUT INTO MY ABILITY TO DO BUSINESS WHEREVER I GO.

PUBLICLY CALLING OUT A BUSINESS OR BAD BUSINESS DEALINGS

Has NOTHING to do with the BUSINESS OF MUSIC <~ if you find yourself worrying about what people think or what they say – or how they feel – then you are running into a dead end, and THAT is not BUSINESS.

WHEN I PAY A COMPANY OR PERSON – and they do not provide the services based on the way they are promoted – I have a right <~ to complain <~ and – when it impacts my community – I have a right to speak up. There are a lot of real things that a lot of people think is just – ENTERTAINMENT and that – is something I cannot – tolerate.

I DO NOT EXPECT ANYONE TO FOLLOW ME – BUT I WILL DO WHAT I BELIEVE IS RIGHT – OVER PROFIT – ANY DAY OF THE WEEK – I WILL HELP PEOPLE – EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT GOING TO HELP THEMSELVES – because that is what I DO for my OWN REASONS.

MAJORITY OF PEOPLE – CONFUSE SOCIAL MEDIA WITH REAL WORLD

That is why we USE SOCIAL MEDIA as a place to conduct ENTERTAINMENT – and PROMOTION – as well as connecting with other up and coming artist WHO ARE NOT INVOLVED IN BUSINESS – but – more so – LOOKING FOR WORK.

A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS NOR WILL THEY WANT TO UNDERSTAND THIS – because – if they do not have some form of personal connection to you – they feel like they will not be involved in your BUSINESS – but – if they do not contribute – to your FINANCIAL situation – THERE IS NO BUSINESS – and – their participation does not mean they deserve a % of the EARNINGS generated UNLESS – there is a contract in place and a agreement was made PRIOR to whatever you are doing.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A PLACE FOR BUSINESS

Let me explain something, once you start talking serious things – MOVE YOUR COMMUNICATION AND TRANSACTIONS OFF OF SOCIAL MEDIA <~ A lot of people – even industry rappers – waste their time – entertaining on SOCIAL MEDIA.

NO EMAIL – NO BUSINESS – NO REAL EFFORT OR THINKING

Learn how to use EMAIL COMMUNICATION to keep a RECORD OF ALL YOUR COMMUNICATION WITH OUTSIDE ENTITIES IN REGARD TO BUSINESS. This will SAVE YOUR LIFE.

The media stuff, the blogs, the vlogs, the interviews – that is ALL ENTERTAINMENT even if we are talking about real things. Real things – being used as entertainment translates to more drama and LESS BUSINESS.

I’M 41 – I DON’T GO TO CLUBS AND BARS – IF YOU DO – CHANGE THAT

Has nothing to do with the specifics of what’s going on <~ has everything to do with the fact – it’s hard to MAKE MONEY – when the stuff that doesn’t matter gets brought up all the time.

SO IF YOU CONTINUE to be a customer to the local clubs / bars and other entertainment outlets <~ you will find yourself SPENDING MONEY and CALLING IT BUSINESS – when you are paying for the stuff you can build using SOCIAL MEDIA.

NOTE: You can go to a club – pay for a bottle – give away free shots and hand out promotional materials while taking pictures at your table etc. – then go home and make a bunch of promo material – to promote on the socials and put in blogs etc. follow up with anyone who taps in from the night and will get better results then trying to NETWORK at a club or any music event.

UNDERSTAND THE MARKET

A lot of RAPPERS cause friction with other rappers because they are CHARGING FEES and the RAPPERS they try to charge – don’t have the money to spend on paying rappers. RAPPERS WHO DO – and SPEND THAT MONEY – LIKE YOUR MUSIC – THEY MAY LIKE YOU – and that doesn’t mean they are going to get that money back because YOUR NAME and YOUR MUSIC may not justify the investment.

PAYING LOCAL RAPPERS IN MORE PERSONAL – NOT BUSINESS

ANOTHER THING – it’s not worthy it to pay a rapper for anything because MOST RAPPERS don’t bring value to a situation – OUTSIDE BEING a GOOD TALKING POINT or maybe they are just cool and it’s dope to associate with them – that’s real.

A talking point <~ in YOUR BUSINESS – if you are smart and can make money using BUSINESS TACTICS <~ as any COMMUNITY COLLEGE can teach in MARKETING 101.

ONCE I STOPPED GOING ON FACEBOOK EVERY DAY

My BUSINESS started to take off – money was coming in – I had less drama and more profit – BUT there was that – “Industry” vibe that stops a lot of local artist from sticking to the BORING STUFF every start up needs to focus on WHILE BUILDING THEIR BUSINESS.

RAPPERS NEED TO SPEND MONEY ON THEMSELVES

Which may come in many variations – clothes – haircuts – shoes – socks – all that – food – if you drink/smoke – all that contributes to whatever you are presenting as your RAP persona.

EVEN IF YOU THINK THAT PERSONA IS A REFLECTION OF THE REAL YOU – you have to understand – every second you are working on rap – you are investing time which has value even if you are NOT GETTING PAID.

SO WHY POST A STAT – when you can POST A RAP – put a call to action in the comment and start by sharing with your REAL FRIENDS who have a understanding that COMMENTING and LIKING is part of the work to help contribute to YOUR growth – and – return the favor – because it will come in handy when building a buzz.

SET UP A CYPHER with you and YOUR BOYS – get that local video guy to tap in and make it a PROMOTIONAL thing for everyone <~ use it the right way and make agreements that are STURDY and everyone stands by NO MATTER WHO INVOLVED.

I MAKE MORE MONEY WITH PEOPLE I CAN’T STAND BECAUSE WE FOCUS ON WORK AND KEEP STRICT AGREEMENTS THAT INCLUDE PROMOTIONAL CLAUSES.

PEOPLE WILL ACT LIKE SHARING YOUR CONTENT IS SOMETHING that affects the way they are seen in the public and that may result in some of the people you think support you – to not support you publicly – which is something EVERYONE does at one point or another. DO NOT let that bother you or bog you down – just work on finding people who will support you – even if it is through some mutual support thing.

IT’S OKAY IF THEY DON’T SUPPORT YOU – LET’S RECAP

If there is NO MONEY – there is NO BUSINESS – YOU CAN call it business but it is NOT BUSINESS.

YOUR PERSONAL LIFE – has nothing to do with the BUSINESS you conduct. If you find yourself explaining YOUR PESONAL TRAITS when there is NO MONEY / BUSINESS – you will find yourself stuck because you aren’t working.

TAKE ALL YOUR BUSINESS DEALINGS OFF OF SOCIAL MEDIA – if you are going to book a show – do it through email – if you are going to make a plan with other artist or entertainment professionals – take it off social media.

DO NOT – MAKE VERBAL AGREEMENTS WITHOUT FOLLOWING UP IN WRITING AND – MAKE SURE YOU – GET – CONFIRMATION <~ SO THAT THERE IS A CLEAR – DOCUMENTED – AGREEMENT ON WHATEVER IT IS YOU ARE DOING – IF IT IS NOT IN WRITING – AND IT NOT AGREED UPON – THERE IS NO POINT – MOVING FORWARD.

It’s CHEAPER to pay some people – then – trying to build or network. SOMETIMES – it is easier to PAY SOMEONE to do what you need them to do – but – beware – you need to make sure the people you pay – are serious about doing the things YOU PAY THEM TO DO.

YOU CAN BE AWESOME – and suck at doing your job – which can HURT YOUR BUSINESS.

I’m the opposite – I’m a HORRIBLE person (sike) but I do great business – ayeee… *Replace HORRIBLE with – wild…

If you are trying to make it in RAP – RAP – like – who told you that you had to drop records and they would immediately take off <~ you need to make everything you do – worth it – so – make content – promote that content – and repeat.

WHEN YOU DROP A TRACK – use the stuff you kicked up with your promotional material to get yourself streams/plays from the same people who tapped in for your promo stuff.

FINALLY – DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET PAID OR PAY PEOPLE

You can build a reputation among the people who matter OR you can entertain the people who do not contribute to your actual business. It’s a choice that everyone has to make when they step into this tricky field but – for anyone who is not in entertainment –

DO NOT LET THE SOCIALS FOOL YOU – THANK YOU

We want to make it very clear that we are looking at this strictly from a professional stand point, while most would like to believe – this is a personal vendetta – we want to make it very CLEAR this is #StrictlyBidness.

When Managing A EVENT you MUST be sure to put one thing above everything. That is SAFETY – SAFETY – SAFETY. COMMON SENSE would state – in a industry where men who are between the ages of 16 and 40 – there would be some – who are really about that life.

WHILE WE WOULD LOVE TO DIG INTO THE SPECULATION – police are STILL investigating the event, which includes a homicide of a victim who has yet to be identified.

This really breaks our hearts because we understand the frustration of running into this situation and this is what we work so hard to prevent by talking about the issues we face in the LOCAL COMMUNITY.

Regardless of where these people who got shot were from, they did not deserve to go to a RAP SHOW and get shot up. People went out for a night of fun and they went home with trauma. A whole community is discussing this issue like it’s a expected thing and we should accept – risking our lives for LOCAL glory.

This is a VERY sad experience for anyone to see let alone learn about and we hope everyone is taking some time to heal during these hard times. WHILE we were trying to warn everyone this would happen, we experienced something that was not – expected – or wanted….

Let’s take the time to pray for the state and think about what was missed that could of lead up to this situation.

XThe Gawd is a kid I have been dealing with since he was around 17, now in his mid 20s – he is currently serving a prison sentence due to an unfortunate incident that he was involved in.

This situation is unique because while XThe Gawd is a minority – he was not from the city – but chose to go to the city to earn his stripes as he climbed the ranks as a local artist.

GOING VIRAL and making INDUSTRY MOVES by connecting with the TOP PROMOTERS of the state – was always on his mind and his actions reflected a desire to make FAST MONEY to cover expenses associated with gaining traction.

I fought my hardest to keep him in line BUT HOW CAN I COMPETE WITH THE BIG DOGS – who dangled their “relationships” with celebrities and the looming “powers that be” talk that pulled him from my grasp.

As a personal friend I watched his downward spiral and I fear this will end in another tragedy as far as dead up and coming CONNECTICUT rappers.

DO THE MATH <~ typical – HAS BEEN – acts charge anywhere from $3,000 – $8000 to come to Connecticut – sit in a chair for a few hours – then go back to New York and play Mr. Icon <~

Jada Kiss the Goat did the thing on a recent Vs. Challenge and now he wants to pepper the scene with these cash grabs because PROMOTERS LIKE BIG MIKE – bring no value to the scene – but – he can make a killing selling a concept of “Industry” that doesn’t exist in Connecticut.

THIS PROVES THAT ATTENTION AND BARS don’t make you smart enough to make a legit opportunity for rappers that can make you money WHILE solidifying your place among the hip hop elites – but no – settle for the $8,000 and let the Culture Vulture do his “Big Mike” pitch to every – rapper who isn’t really grasping anything associated with how to make a “opportunity” work.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM – you wave the culture flag but – don’t see value in a small market like Connecticut using a local artist turned whatever I am – to take the reigns so the REAL WORK can be done ?
