CHUM

What is your artist name? CHUM

What kind of music do you make? I am a versatile artist but I am currently concentrated on gengetone music that is on the rise. I have made a couple of trap songs with my friend and producer 2 kb and I hope and pray we will make it to an album. My music is mixed, Swahili and English I have a good number of streams in the US, UK and Kenya, I hope to be an international artist soon and soon enough. I came up with my slogan motto brand “beastboss” set to go international in a few years. I rap about my society, love, party life, challenges and injustice song by song. This past few months I was entirely concentrated in love because you know. I produce my music in 2kb records in my free time and hope to rise with our own home studio so as to be consistent in making more music and quality work!

How old are you and when did you start creating music? I started in high school rapping and singing randomly did not know how to write raps. Practiced and now I’m good. In 2018 did my first recording with vice lord  a song called “nyenyenye” and it was a hit on YouTube. Since then I never looked back.

What do you want the reader to know about you and your music? I’m passionate about music and try to put my life in it so that others who we share the same challenges know they are not alone!

What are your goals when it comes to your music career? I want to go down as the greatest of my time, something like Michael Jackson. I want to inspire lives. I want to change sounds, all in all I want to have an impact!

KD – Recording Artist & Critic

I noticed KD on Twitter after I retweeted one of his tweets. The tweet itself was not uncommon but I noticed that my notifications included responses from KD, which really caught my attention after the fifth response.

KD on Twitter

The honest reviews made me want to learn more about KD, it’s one thing to compliment every artist who drops links on a tweet, but it’s another to give real opinions that could potentially help the artist develop their sound. It shows that KD is interested in really connecting with the artist who engage with his tweets.

KD on Twitter

KD is a musician from Indiana. His music is a reflection of the times and he has been creating dope tracks like Love Sick and Spaghetti Monster for the last two and a half years.

He noticed a lot of “Drop Your Links” tweets with little or no interaction from the accounts asking artist to drop links. He came to the conclusion they were only interested in getting engagement and recognized that did little for the artist.

KD decided that he would go out of his way listen to the work that artist presented on twitter and give them his opinion as a way to show his support. Another reason that KD chooses to do this is he wants meet artist from all over the world and grow his network.

Artist like KD are far and few between. I see a lot of artist using the “support” method to gain exposure. Those artist normally lack quality or a updated sound, KD has both. He fits the right age bracket and creates music that is trendy and appealing to the people who will define this decade when it comes to Pop Culture.

That makes his opinion credible on a number of levels. As a artist he can pick apart a track and give a honest review based on sound quality as well as content. As a fan of music, he can determine what is going to be popular among his peers as well as other groups in his age range. Finally, as a genuine person who wants to help artist, he gives advice the artist can apply to their future work to make them better in one way or another.

KD on Twitter

“The real world will tear someone up with no explanation. If I can give them the realization that I am a part of the real world but I care and want to see them grow then hopefully they’ll keep growing and keep seeking out advice from random people and listeners like me.” – KD

When asked about his future and where he sees himself, besides creating his own art, he wants to create a #Youtube channel where he can review music and give artist feedback. He wants to inspire artist to do better, focus on the real and that means accepting the bad, with the good.

“I see myself becoming great and really inspirational. I know that I have what it takes and it’s only an amount of time until I get my clout. I will also be the most versatile rappers too. That time will come. When it does, everyone who supported and that will support will benefit from it. The grind never stops and neither does the love.” – KD

Fogey “Do You Ever”

Where did the name of this song come from? The name of this song, “Do You Ever”, comes from the first line in the hook/chorus. “Do you ever feel….”

How long does it take for you to write a song and how long did this one take you write? It really varies from song to song.  Sometimes I can write a whole song in a matter of hours, sometimes days, and I have even taken months to finish lyrics on some songs that I run into writer’s block on.  I might get stuck on a lyric, or which direction to take my lyrics, so I will just put it away and come back to it on another day.  Also, in my earlier years of writing, it was done by classic pen to paper.  Over the years, my creative process has evolved into not actually “writing” lyrics.  Now, when I create lyrics, I come up with lines to the beat I’m working with, once I like it, I rap it to myself over and over, then more lines get added; then I go back to the beginning and rap it to myself and continue to repeat this process until the song is finished.  Basically fragments of freestyles all patched together as a cohesive body of work.  This method can take longer when it comes to creating lyrics, but the payoff is that when I go to record in the studio, I never have to bother with trying to read along with my lyrics on paper or on my phone.  On paper, I often have lots of scratched out parts and edits made all over the page, and it can be hard to follow it smoothly.  Or I may not even be able to read my hurried chicken-scratch handwriting lol. I believe by not having to read my lyrics as I deliver them in the studio, I am able to focus more on the delivery and pouring my heart and soul into the vocals; I want people to FEEL what I’m saying, not just hear it.  When my brain is busy focusing on reading and deciphering my poor handwriting, or scrolling down my phone, I lose focus on an emotional delivery.  Not only does this method help with delivery, but by having my lyrics memorized when I go to record, I am able to knock out my vocals very quickly which saves time and money!  I’m also ready to perform the song live immediately after creating it.  This song in particular, I wrote in a span of two days. I recorded it in a day, but mixing it took over a month (off and on) because as of last summer I invested in my own home studio setup and began teaching myself how to record, mix, and master my own music.  This was a very challenging song to mix, and I almost sent it out to be mixed professionally, but I was determined to do it myself.  So I am extremely proud of this track for that reason alone.

What is your favorite part of this song? Why? I really like the hook in this song, as it has a dope melody and ties the whole song together.  But the verses are my favorite part(s), because this song is about depression and suicide, aimed to inspire people that struggle with these issues.  Each verse touches on very real scenarios and comes from a very personal place, so when I get feedback about how this song is helping someone, it really hits home for me.

When people listen to this song, what do you want them to take away as far as message? The moral of this song is to keep fighting, and never give up or give in.  There is always someone to speak to, or a song to turn to for support and encouragement.  Music is medicine, and this song was created for that purpose.  I actually had someone message me the other day to say my music was literally a lifesaver right now, and this song was a wake-up call for them.  That’s what I view as success in my musical endeavors.

Do you think this song represents who you are as a artist? I absolutely think this song represents who I am as an artist.  Most of my music has a message or moral, and comes from real experience.  This song came from a vulnerable place, and wasn’t easy to admit some of these feelings to myself, let alone share it with the world. It’s easy to feel judged, embarrassed, or weak when battling with depression or suicidal thoughts, so speaking out on my own struggles was hard. But I found strength in knowing it would probably help someone out there. I aim to be authentic, and always create music with the intention of inspiring others in some way. So this song is a perfect example of who I am as an artist.

Tall Tree “Better Off”

Where did the name of this song come from? ‘Better Off’ got it’s song title from the beat made by Young Taylor titled ‘better off’. I enjoy when producers name their beat something other then the artist name type beat, give you something to go off of to start the writing process, but I usually go with a title that relates to the song.

How long does it take for you to write a song and how long did this one take you write?I usually like to spend a couple hours writing a song to make sure everything is well organized and not rushed. It doesn’t always take this long to write a song, but some times it’s easier when I know what topic i’m looking to make a song about. This one took me about an hour to write

What is your favorite part of this song? Why? My favorite part of this song was the creation of everything! I made the first version of this song in October 2018, and finally came back to it in in June of 2019. Originally I had made this song to relieve some stress about how I was feeling at the time making the difficult decision to be better off alone at times. I linked up with Kilkashi an Audio Engineer with a degree from C.R.A.S. in Arizona. After all of this was taken care of and we got the song sounding how we wanted, I got started on official music video.

When people listen to this song, what do you want them to take away as far as message? When people listen to ‘Better Off’ I hope they take the message that it’s ok to be alone. The chorus talks about ” i’m better off alone tonight “, I want fans and listeners to know that they are not in the wrong if they don’t want to go be with friends or family. Sometimes we have to sacrifice to make our dreams come true!

Do you think this song represents who you are as a artist? Yes of course I think this song represents me as an artist! Not that I always blow my friends and family off, but I do spend a lot of time working on my music. There has been multiple times that I’ve had to skip a friends party/event to continue working on my newest song, and I believe it to be a necessary sacrifice to obtain your goals! As they once said “Rome Wasn’t Built In One Day”.

End with a message for the reader – Me and my girlfriend made this stop motion video for ‘Better Off’. This took 9 days and over 300+ pictures, and because of this the sentimental value of the song sky rocketed! Nothing better then making a timeless song with visuals for the fans/listeners! It would mean the world to me if you could take 3 minutes out of your beautiful day and check out the Official Music Video or Stream ‘Better Off’ on Spotify!
