Where did the name of this song come from? The name of this song, “Do You Ever”, comes from the first line in the hook/chorus. “Do you ever feel….”
How long does it take for you to write a song and how long did this one take you write? It really varies from song to song. Sometimes I can write a whole song in a matter of hours, sometimes days, and I have even taken months to finish lyrics on some songs that I run into writer’s block on. I might get stuck on a lyric, or which direction to take my lyrics, so I will just put it away and come back to it on another day. Also, in my earlier years of writing, it was done by classic pen to paper. Over the years, my creative process has evolved into not actually “writing” lyrics. Now, when I create lyrics, I come up with lines to the beat I’m working with, once I like it, I rap it to myself over and over, then more lines get added; then I go back to the beginning and rap it to myself and continue to repeat this process until the song is finished. Basically fragments of freestyles all patched together as a cohesive body of work. This method can take longer when it comes to creating lyrics, but the payoff is that when I go to record in the studio, I never have to bother with trying to read along with my lyrics on paper or on my phone. On paper, I often have lots of scratched out parts and edits made all over the page, and it can be hard to follow it smoothly. Or I may not even be able to read my hurried chicken-scratch handwriting lol. I believe by not having to read my lyrics as I deliver them in the studio, I am able to focus more on the delivery and pouring my heart and soul into the vocals; I want people to FEEL what I’m saying, not just hear it. When my brain is busy focusing on reading and deciphering my poor handwriting, or scrolling down my phone, I lose focus on an emotional delivery. Not only does this method help with delivery, but by having my lyrics memorized when I go to record, I am able to knock out my vocals very quickly which saves time and money! I’m also ready to perform the song live immediately after creating it. This song in particular, I wrote in a span of two days. I recorded it in a day, but mixing it took over a month (off and on) because as of last summer I invested in my own home studio setup and began teaching myself how to record, mix, and master my own music. This was a very challenging song to mix, and I almost sent it out to be mixed professionally, but I was determined to do it myself. So I am extremely proud of this track for that reason alone.
What is your favorite part of this song? Why? I really like the hook in this song, as it has a dope melody and ties the whole song together. But the verses are my favorite part(s), because this song is about depression and suicide, aimed to inspire people that struggle with these issues. Each verse touches on very real scenarios and comes from a very personal place, so when I get feedback about how this song is helping someone, it really hits home for me.
When people listen to this song, what do you want them to take away as far as message? The moral of this song is to keep fighting, and never give up or give in. There is always someone to speak to, or a song to turn to for support and encouragement. Music is medicine, and this song was created for that purpose. I actually had someone message me the other day to say my music was literally a lifesaver right now, and this song was a wake-up call for them. That’s what I view as success in my musical endeavors.
Do you think this song represents who you are as a artist? I absolutely think this song represents who I am as an artist. Most of my music has a message or moral, and comes from real experience. This song came from a vulnerable place, and wasn’t easy to admit some of these feelings to myself, let alone share it with the world. It’s easy to feel judged, embarrassed, or weak when battling with depression or suicidal thoughts, so speaking out on my own struggles was hard. But I found strength in knowing it would probably help someone out there. I aim to be authentic, and always create music with the intention of inspiring others in some way. So this song is a perfect example of who I am as an artist.
