Robby Monroe “Free”

Where did the name of this song come from? The name of the song is called Free. Free came from the beat actually. When I was listening to the instrumental I was feeling really good and relaxed and just free. When I started just singing to the beat to get a good melody, I kept coming back to singing the word Free so I just knew that had to be the title and theme of the song.

How long does it take for you to write a song and how long did this one take you write? This song took about two days. The first day it was done but then I wanted to make the message of the song less personal. I realized that with a song like this, it would work best being more free in its message to attach to anyone’s situation. Freedom is the essences of the song and the message it portrays.

What is your favorite part of this song? Why? For Free, I think I have two favorite parts. First part is the intro of the song. When I was working on the structure of this song, I was really focused on Mariah Carey’s song Dreamlover. That is such a happy and light song it makes me feel free listening to it. I believe she really sets the tone of freedom and happiness with the intro of whistles. Originally for this song I was doing the same whistle melody Mariah Carey did in her Dreamlover intro but eventually I decided to do my own melody and I’m glad I did that. Hopefully my whistle melody becomes as iconic. My second favorite part of this song is the ending chorus. The amount of harmonies and adlibs are just so satisfying and encouraging. I always love the endings of my songs because I really start to show my vocal range and get kind of wild vocally. Like to end with a bang as they say.

When people listen to this song, what do you want them to take away as far as message? What I want people to take away from this song is, that you shouldn’t let anyone hold you back from your freedom. If you feel trapped somewhere or with someone then it is okay to leave. It is your duty to protect your own happiness and the easiest way to gain happiness is to be completely away from whatever makes you feel bad. In the lyrics it sounds like I am leaving someone who makes me feel trapped, but that can apply to situations as well. Strive and fight for your happiness and let no one take it or keep it from you again. Once you are truly free, can’t anything ever hurt you again.

Do you think this song represents who you are as an artist? On a multitude of ways I do believe this song fully represents me as an artist. Robby Monroe is an unboxed artist. Meaning, any and all genres are fair game and will be at least be dabbled in at some point. But when this song was put out, what people classified it as and what it is were instantly two different things. This song’s beat is 80’s styled Pop. But I guess the way I was singing or the way the message came off, people were calling it RnB or Indie. I feel like as an artist who doesn’t have a “home genre” I will always make songs of one genre, but have people hearing something else. I still don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing but it does keep the conversation on me and that I know is good. I would love to open up more people’s mind to what an artist truly is beyond representing one genre for their entire career.

End with a message for the reader – My message to whoever may be reading this before or after listening to Free is, that I hope regardless of what genre you think it was or what you think the message is saying, that you feel good in your day after listening to the song. I have studied music for years and I have degrees in Psychology so I know for a fact that music can change a person’s whole mood. I just want to do my part as an artist to make others feel better or feel heard and that someone else out there went through or feels the same ways they do. Reader, you are worth it and you are loved. Fight for your freedom and joy and protect it with your life because that’s the best thing you could ever have in this world.

Kwon Rabbit

What is your artist name? Kwon Rabbit

What kind of music do you make? Hip-Hop  ⁃ I like make music based on what I think, feel or experienced. Not saying my life was the worst but I feel I been through enough things to talk about that hopefully others can relate to. A few artist that do that for me are Eminem, NF, Joyner Lucas, Biggie and Kendrick Lamar. I felt they made it cause they kept it real. So I’m trynna do the same. Hip-Hop has always been an outlet for me. I felt like no one ever understood me as a kid so I let you explain why now that I’m older and have the voice to express that.

How old are you and when did you start creating music? I was 16 when I wrote my first lyric. But it was around age 19 I wanted this to be my life.

What are your goals when it comes to your music career? I just want to make enough money to pay bills and make an impact in peoples lives. Anything after that is a bonus.

What do you want the reader to know about you and your music? That just when you listen to my music. There’s a little bit of every sub-genre of Hip-Hop in my music. Every song has a different feel but it’s all about one topic and that’s how I get through tough times, well trying sometimes.

Queen Beach

What is your artist name? Queen Beach

What kind of music do you make? Loud, Floor-filling Indie Rock. Queen Beach were forged in West London in 2019 and have proceeded to spread across the whole Capital in their quest to move people with the sound of their music. A three-piece act consisting of Louis, Max and Patrick, the band draws from the sounds of The Strokes, Courtney Barnett and New Order to create a visceral post-punk listening experience unlike anything you’ve heard before. Their first release was recorded in early 2020 and includes ‘All the Pubs are Closing Down’ a surprisingly prophetic song for the world today. Their music has caught the Internet’s attention, with soundsindie.com describing them as ‘Lyrically intense with an awesome driving bassline, guitars that scream Gang Of Four in their simplistic and entirely necessary sparseness… if you did some mad crossbreeding between Gang of Four, Joy Division and The Macabees you’d get Queen Beach.’ A band with a growing following who are surely ones to watch.

How old are you and when did you start creating music? 27/8 and we’ve been playing music separately since age 14/15

What are your goals when it comes to your music career? Being able to change people’s lives for the better

What do you want the reader to know about you and your music? It’s made with a sense of fun while also being meticulously constructed

Arkayde The Sage

What is your artist name? Arkayde The Sage

What kind of music do you make? Hip-Hop beats primarily. A few RnB beats too. But right now I’m mainly focused on making beats for my album, a DJ Khaled type project but a little darker and a lot more DIY. As far as influences go, I grew up in the DMV so Go-Go music has definitely influenced my sound. I love bouncy percussions and I owe that to Go-Go. Outside of that, I’m pretty eclectic with my music tastes. Lyrically 2pac, Lauryn Hill, India Arie, Juice WRLD, artists who make you think. That’s the kind of music I want to make. That’s the kind of music I write. And that’s the kind of album I’m currently working on; good music to make the listener stop and think.

How old are you and when did you start creating music? 27 and I was 15 but I stopped at 17. I had my oldest kid at 16. So, at the time I didn’t see it as a lucrative or realistic career path, so I quit in favor of putting my energy in to studying something more obtainable. But about 3 years ago I came across GarageBand on my iPad and I just haven’t stopped since.

What are your goals when it comes to your music career? Honestly I just want to make good music. Initially I wanted to sell beats to upcoming artists, and to a small degree I still do. But overall, at this point I’m more focused on executive producing my own albums featuring indie artists whose music I’m personally a fan of. More than anything I want to make music that both illustrates the pain of life and comforts the soul. That is the ultimate goal.

What do you want the reader to know about you and your music? I want to bring emotion back to hip-hop. I make dark beats because I want to touch on dark subjects. I want to discuss topics like depression, anxiety, loneliness, politics, racism, etc. And while it isn’t all doom and gloom (my first single Groovy – feat Bobby Neutron is pretty upbeat) my “target audience” are sad blerds and Emo kids like myself.

YSK Adam

What is your artist name? YSK Adam

What kind of music do you make? I’ve never been able to put myself into a category, my style ranges from old school boom bap, to alternative rock, more modern styles of rap / trap acoustic singing, I could go on. I honestly believe I’m one of the most versatile artists out right now and I say that with a 100% humbleness. My influences in music tend to range wide aswell. Growing up I was an old school rap fan with Eminem, Dre, Xzibit, 50 cent etc, being the main people i listened to but in the more recent years my biggest influences for my life and mindset have been XXXTENTACION, Juice WRLD, LiL Peep, and a few more. My intent with most of my music is to let whoever is listening know they are not alone in anything they’re experiencing and there are people that understand the emotion they’re going through. Wether that be anger, depression anxiety. There is someone who’s been there and me personally through the problems i’ve experienced want to share that with people and share my demons. Of course i have songs too that do not have the deeper meaning and are just for pure fun.

How old are you and when did you start creating music? I am 16 and I started making music around 13.

What are your goals when it comes to your music career? My goal for music is to have a loyal fan base in which i can just connect with and have that family relationship with. My goal is to make it big enough to where i can spread my energy, my message and my positivity through out people that enjoy my music and me as a person.

What do you want the reader to know about you and your music? My music is from the heart. Wether it’s a screaming song where i go crazy, or a song preaching about my demons and depression, i mean it all. And i hope it can help a few people realise they’re not alone
