Where did the name of this song come from? The name of the song is called Free. Free came from the beat actually. When I was listening to the instrumental I was feeling really good and relaxed and just free. When I started just singing to the beat to get a good melody, I kept coming back to singing the word Free so I just knew that had to be the title and theme of the song.
How long does it take for you to write a song and how long did this one take you write? This song took about two days. The first day it was done but then I wanted to make the message of the song less personal. I realized that with a song like this, it would work best being more free in its message to attach to anyone’s situation. Freedom is the essences of the song and the message it portrays.
What is your favorite part of this song? Why? For Free, I think I have two favorite parts. First part is the intro of the song. When I was working on the structure of this song, I was really focused on Mariah Carey’s song Dreamlover. That is such a happy and light song it makes me feel free listening to it. I believe she really sets the tone of freedom and happiness with the intro of whistles. Originally for this song I was doing the same whistle melody Mariah Carey did in her Dreamlover intro but eventually I decided to do my own melody and I’m glad I did that. Hopefully my whistle melody becomes as iconic. My second favorite part of this song is the ending chorus. The amount of harmonies and adlibs are just so satisfying and encouraging. I always love the endings of my songs because I really start to show my vocal range and get kind of wild vocally. Like to end with a bang as they say.
When people listen to this song, what do you want them to take away as far as message? What I want people to take away from this song is, that you shouldn’t let anyone hold you back from your freedom. If you feel trapped somewhere or with someone then it is okay to leave. It is your duty to protect your own happiness and the easiest way to gain happiness is to be completely away from whatever makes you feel bad. In the lyrics it sounds like I am leaving someone who makes me feel trapped, but that can apply to situations as well. Strive and fight for your happiness and let no one take it or keep it from you again. Once you are truly free, can’t anything ever hurt you again.
Do you think this song represents who you are as an artist? On a multitude of ways I do believe this song fully represents me as an artist. Robby Monroe is an unboxed artist. Meaning, any and all genres are fair game and will be at least be dabbled in at some point. But when this song was put out, what people classified it as and what it is were instantly two different things. This song’s beat is 80’s styled Pop. But I guess the way I was singing or the way the message came off, people were calling it RnB or Indie. I feel like as an artist who doesn’t have a “home genre” I will always make songs of one genre, but have people hearing something else. I still don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing but it does keep the conversation on me and that I know is good. I would love to open up more people’s mind to what an artist truly is beyond representing one genre for their entire career.
End with a message for the reader – My message to whoever may be reading this before or after listening to Free is, that I hope regardless of what genre you think it was or what you think the message is saying, that you feel good in your day after listening to the song. I have studied music for years and I have degrees in Psychology so I know for a fact that music can change a person’s whole mood. I just want to do my part as an artist to make others feel better or feel heard and that someone else out there went through or feels the same ways they do. Reader, you are worth it and you are loved. Fight for your freedom and joy and protect it with your life because that’s the best thing you could ever have in this world.
