How TikTok has changed the music industry

TikTok has become a go-to platform for discovering new music. The video sharing app was released in the U.S. in 2016 and rose to fame during the pandemic when young adults were quarantined and hungry for content.

Among TikTok’s now 1 billion monthly active users, there is an entire music industry—where users preview albums to gauge consumer interest, create trends to new songs and even pay influencers to market those songs. Many of today’s famous musicians started their careers on the app, including Olivia Rodridgo, Lil Nas X and Dove Cameron.

While TikTok might create opportunities for musicians, some artists, including Halsey, Charlie XCX and Charlie Puth have complained that their labels are forcing them to heavily promote their music on TikTok before releasing a song, interfering with their artistic integrity. READ MORE HERE

HOW OLD are these “managers” “producers” “photographers” is important – because – as older people – shouldn’t they be – in a better position then the people they claim to want to “help” ?

ANYONE who is stuck in a situation where they have NO WAY OUT – should look at the people who are in the same position – but – decades older and looking at you as a meal ticket.

LET’S BE CLEAR – if you are <~ a young person getting involved in MUSIC – you should be well aware of the reality – when it comes to CONDUCTING BUSINESS IN MUSIC – but – on the flip side – how can you know if you are falling victim to some form of predatory behavior – that – many of us – are so blind to because we could never imagine that anyone would use – indie music – as a place to prey upon the hopes / dreams of the youth while – living these fantasies as the “big dawg” – or “big homie”.

We watch children – die – to a beat – and we forget that those children <~ have adults around them – who are there to “handle” the business – but how are they handling the “business” if the artist – are allowed to walk down a dangerous path when it comes to their music careers ?

  1. They talk about “family” and “loyalty” – because everyone knows – as a small business you should pledge blind loyalty to a grown man claiming to be able to help your career.
  2. They don’t have a vehicle or way to get around without getting someone else to give them a ride or – pay for their travel – while public transportation is a thing – it’s hard to let someone who needs a ride – be in charge of where you are going since – they literally don’t have the keys.
  3. They conduct business on Facebook – NO – we are not talking about PROMOTION – we are talking about – calling you from the FB / IG / Snap app – to “talk business” or to schedule “studio sessions” etc.
  4. They got time to be in the studio with you – There is absolutely NO REASON for anyone to be in the studio UNLESS they are involved in the creative process – and we mean – writing – actively doing something to contribute to the production.
  5. They stop you from talking to anyone who is REALLY involved in music – without offering anything to replace the opportunities that come your way. These the same dudes who aren’t qualified to work at Wendy’s.
  6. They live in the same city as you and – rent or live with other people – You hit a certain age and you should have a few things lined up before trying to become a freelance “business” professional – most these guys have NO management experience and assume “Managers” just tell people what to do vs. – understanding how business really works – which they should – since they want to play the part in music.
  7. They get you involved in illegal activity or they participate in your illegal activity – getting arrested with some old head who turns out to be a career possession of a controlled substance ass criminal – isn’t cool… actually – it’s corny.
  8. They got time to gossip and pull up to showcase events / parties and other things that grown men shouldn’t be around since MOST BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS – do not spend – personal time – with artist <~ UNLESS they have that time – which – most business professionals – even those run their own companies – don’t really have…
  9. THEY HAVE first hand knowledge of gossip / personal beef between people who are 20 years younger than they are… no adult has that kind of time to spend UNLESS they are not doing much with their lives…
  10. They can’t cover the cost to get into a venue and try to use their work experience to justify why they shouldn’t have to pay admission fee’s etc. – like – magically having a job means you get free access to anywhere.

Stay in school – associate with people who are in the same age bracket as you are – if you need some “professional” help.

OUTSOURCE the work – and make connections with people who are NOT able to co-sign your bad moves.

BE SMART – if you choose to live a lifestyle that puts you at risk – pay attention to the idiots around you – because MOST – people – do they dirt on they lonely…. #Skurrrr
